The paper examines the impact of traditional institutions on local government administration in Nigeria, with a focus on Offa Local Government in Kwara State. The study aims to reveal the role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s political system using Offa Local Government as a case study. The theoretical framework is based on political participation, and the research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing primary data collected through key informant interviews to ensure objectivity. The core argument of the study is that traditional institutions play a significant and positive role in the political and administrative development of local governments in Nigeria, as demonstrated by the case of Offa Local Government. Despite their contributions, such as enhancing participation, stability, and grassroots governance, the study highlights that the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not clearly define or recognize the roles of traditional institutions, thereby undermining their effectiveness. The study concludes that constitutional recognition and clearer institutional integration of traditional rulers are essential for strengthening local government administration and promoting sustainable development.
